Description

These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.

EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.

Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.

The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Myths lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Teaching Myths with Thor: An Evidence-Based ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Resource

Looking to build key literacy skills and critical thinking in an engaging way? This superb KS2 myth lesson using the story of Thor is a complete English resource perfect for developing reading, writing, comparing texts, and more.

Students will read the Thor myth in full, identifying features that explain natural phenomena – crucial analysis abilities. Answering higher and lower order questions then puts this into practice. Comparing Thor and King Midas gets students evaluating mythic structure and meaning. Writing their own myth creativity applies this knowledge.

The lesson neatly integrates vital evidence-based skills too. Collaborative talk develops reasoning. Self-assessment teaches students to critically evaluate their own work. And the 5 minute teacher CPD models best practice in reflection – assessing an activity’s success to improve future lessons.

With its blend of reading, writing, comparing texts and critical thinking via group work and self-review, I’d give this ready-made Thor myth lesson 5 stars. It’s an all-in-one resource in line with UK curricula for advancing literacy and 21st century skills through engaging content. Students will relish the magical story as they improve comprehension, analysis and communication abilities with this first-rate lesson.
