There is a five-minute evidence-based CPD activity at the end of this lesson which will develop classroom teachers’ skill set. This CPD consists of a research extract on thinking skills with a five-minute activity based on this extract.

Description

These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.

EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.

Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.

The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Three Little Pigs lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Teachers – Want an All-In-One Lesson for English and Thinking Skills? Check Out “The Very Big and the Very Bad Wolf” – Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I recently came across an excellent Three Little Pigs resource called “The Very Big and the Very Bad Wolf” which is part of a series of traditional story lessons. It’s a great 2-in-1 package that develops both English and EBL abilities.

The student activities teach the concept of parody by looking at an amusing rewrite of the Three Little Pigs tale. Students then have a go at creating their own parody and answer higher and lower level questions to build analysis, evaluation and creativity skills.

As well as the literacy and cognitive boost, the inclusion of evidence-based learning (EBL) techniques means students simultaneously advance skills like collaboration, independent learning and self-regulation. The student-friendly icons make it easy for them to recognise which aptitudes they are working on.

There are chances for paired and individual work so this resource can be used for whole classes or tailored to small groups. I also like the “Don’t” rules for talk partner work which help structure peer collaboration.

The five-minute teacher CPD focuses on thinking skills, summarising research on how these can enable students to exceed expected levels of achievement. It ends by asking you to audit and plan how to embed some of the key strategies mentioned.

I would highly recommend “The Very Big and the Very Bad Wolf” to KS2 teachers seeking an engaging one-stop shop for literacy lessons that build writing skills and thinking capacity. A five star resource!
