Description

These evidence-based learning (EBL) lessons are based on classroom practice that has been proven, by research, to maximise thinking, learning and attainment. From an extensive review of educational research, we identified the eight key classroom thinking and learning skills that were common across these research papers. We named these eight key skills “EBL skills”.

EBL skills have been proven by research to maximise learning because they combine the most productive thinking skills with the most effective learning behaviours. Each of our evidence-based learning lessons uses the English curriculum as a framework through which the eight EBL skills are delivered.

Teachers also have the opportunity to add to their own skill set or refresh their existing skills with our five-minute CPD activity, based on one of the EBL skills used in this lesson.

The skills in bold below are the EBL skills developed in this Fantasy Story lesson. Click on each skill to learn more about that skill.

Teachers – Add Some Magic to Your English Lessons! – Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ️

I recently came across a brilliant KS2 English lesson called “Improving Creative Writing using Fantasy Stories” which would make a fantastic addition to any primary classroom. 🏫 Not only does this ready-to-use lesson help develop key English writing skills, it also incorporates evidence-based learning techniques to boost students’ thinking abilities. 💡

The student activities in this fantasy-themed lesson focus on creative writing and include:

✅ Writing 3 opening paragraphs for a fantasy story

✅ Using past tense and first person narration

✅ Applying punctuation rules and descriptive vocabulary

✅ Incorporating dialogue with fantasy characters

There’s also a self-assessment checklist and peer assessment tasks to help students evaluate and improve their own work. These metacognitive activities are so important for deep learning! 🌟

On top of all this great content, there’s an amazing 5-minute CPD extract on the power of metacognition. As teachers, we know that metacognitive skills have more impact on learning than ability alone. This extract explains how metacognition equips students with the tools to tackle complex tasks.

It then provides an action step for designing a classroom poster to showcase the benefits of metacognitive thinking. This is the kind of high-quality, evidence-based CPD that every teacher needs!

Overall, I would give this comprehensive English lesson 5 stars for seamlessly integrating writing skills development with thinking skills training. If you’re looking to push your students’ English abilities while future-proofing them with key learning capabilities, this fantasy-based resource comes highly recommended! Add some magic to your lessons today!
